Well, technically the first ever Pokemon games were Pokemon Green and Pokemon Red in Japan. (The reason the remake's colors were red and green, not red and blue like the American audience may have expected.) Then Blue came and was an updated version of the games in Japan, only available through a special promotion. The improvements and such were sort of similar to the improvement between Gold/Silver and Crystal, Ruby/Sapphire and Emerald, and Diamond/Pearl and Platinum. Because of problems the Americans had trying to localize the original titles due to a fragile source code in the original games, they decided to use the data from Japan's Blue version, but reprogram it into two separate versions to have the same Pokemon and such from the original titles. These games were named Red and Blue version in the US, though being based on Red and Green. Yellow was made to basically resemble the anime. (With being able to have Pikachu as your starter, the appearance of NPCs such as Jessie and James, being able to get all the usual starters through certain in game events, etc.) Since it's based on the anime, that should make it fairly obvious that it was released a while after the first ones, as it was based on the anime and the anime was based on the original games. Hope this helps.
