Answer for USA, Canada and countries running a 60 Hz supply service.
Green is always ground or a bare copper wire is also used. Depending on the voltage power is black, red, blue, and white is the neutral on a 120/ 240 volt system. On a 277/480 volt system power is brown, orange, yellow, and gray for neutral conductor.

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,
on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,
always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

IF YOU ARE NOT ALREADY SURE YOU CAN DO THIS JOB
SAFELY AND COMPETENTLY
REFER THIS WORK TO QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS.

You should always assume everything is positive but the standard color for negative wires are White, tan, green or bare.

In DC systems red is typically positive and black is almost always ground.

Well, it could be either. It depends on what it's connecting to. If the wire isn't connected to anything, it is not inherently negative or positive. It's just wire.

If it is already connected to something, check where it's connected. You can often find a symbol for positive (+) or negative (-).

Most commonly, red is used for positive, and black for negative. All other colors are typically used to speed up repairs by color coding things. They depend on the application or location. For instance, in my guitar amp, a yellow wire goes from the red power LED. All the yellow wires go to LEDs in this instance. If you look at a ballast for fluorescent lights, a yellow wire may connect the starter coil to the connections for the lights.

Always check that a wire is dead before working with it. Red and Black colors designate different "hot" wires while White designates the neutral line. Switch wires often use both wires in a cable, one for each side of the switch. Three way switches, where tow or more switches work for on set of lights, use red and black switch wires (usually). Three phase systems have a different color for each phase along with a neutral. Green or bare wires should always be grounded and not carry any power unless something shorted out. In automotive systems the red wire and battery terminal usually connect to the positive battery terminal, and black to the Negative terminal grounded to the frame. People can have reasons for using different colors than typical or they can just do things wrong, so check first.

the white is the neutral but in older homes the bare can be the neutral.be careful because the neurtal carries more load (sometimes)than the hot.the black or colored is the hot.
