A plugged fuel filter might cause things like a hard to start (long cranking time) but provide a good idle - but then hesitate when pressing the gas pedal to accelerate.
One of the most reliable ways to check is take it off and try to blow through it. If there's any resistance at all, it's starting to plug up.
