About half of the country of Israel is covered by desert, principally the Negev Desert. Much of the rest of Israel is semi-arid. However, Israel also has mountainous areas, fertile green areas, a large freshwater lake, rivers and more.

It didn't. The Land of Israel has always been the same way. It is an arid, rocky place with some fertility due to the Jordan River, the Sea of Galilee and numerous underground aquifers. South of Jerusalem is primarily desert and has always been. However, in the ancient period, much of the desert area was unclaimed wilderness. Compared to the Northeast United States, Israel without irrigation is infertile. Compared to most of the nearby areas (except Lebanon), Israel without irrigation is relatively fertile.
