Possibly your heater core (behind the dash) has sprung a small leak. If you turn on your defroster does your windshield get foggier rather than clearing? That is the "clear sign" of the problem that I've experienced on many vehicles as they age. Also check for dampness on your carpet, another sign.
If the leak is VERY minor you might try something like "stop leak" added to your radiator, but it's probably just a matter of time before your situation escalates from "do you smell antifreeze?" to "geez, what do I do now?".
I have no experience personally replacing heater core on a town car, nor have I priced out anyone else doing it. Suffice it to say it will be a pain in the butt (or back if you do it yourself) and/or expensive.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Paul
Generally, with that smell- the heater core has gone bad.
Yes. The heater core provides the heat which blows out your vents. The heater core has engine coolant flowing through it (it is like a mini radiator) which creates the heat which warms the air that comes out your vents. If you have low coolant, there may be no coolant circulating through heater core, thus causing cold air to blow out vents.
My ac blows fine through the overhead, floor and side vents but intermittentely throught the front vents. What might be the cause?
When there is a problem in the vent system it defaults to defrost setting. Check the doors & vac supply
Most cars will not run hot if the radiator is a little low. It sounds like you may have a pin hole in your heater core (coil) and the stem could be coming through your vents. This should have some smell to it. Most cars will not run hot if the radiator is a little low. use mr. muscle
yeah, it could because the radiator is some what in between the a/c fan and the vents in your car. Check. follow your vents all the way back to ur fan, this is a very simple procedure
That is probably antifreeze steam. Your heater core is a small radiator used to heat your car. The engine heats the antifreeze and circulates it through the heater core. Your blower blows heat through the core (radiator) into the car, and warms you. If the core gets a small leak, it will put out steam.
I'm not sure what vents you are talking about, but usually air vents are known to be working if there is air flowing through them.
If it smells musty check the evaporator drain hose hose. Johnny Texas.
Check the vacuum hose under the hood. May have a leak or have been disconnected. Also check - The blower - this includes its motor, fan and associated components/wiring. Next to check is the coil (this looks like a small radiator) through which the blower moves air is clogged. Check if the vents themselves are clogged.
