I believe the inventor's daughter's name was Jenny. Therefore he named to the spinning jenny. It is said that his daughter, Jenny, mistakingly knocked over the family spinning wheel. The spindle continued to revolve, giving Hargreaves the idea that a whole line of spindles could be worked off just one wheel. That was just a myth. The word "jenny" was an earlier term used for "engine", referring to machine. In fact, Hargreaves had several daughters, but none named Jenny and neither was his wife.
