In 1497 he left Lisbon with three ships and 168 men and rounded the cape, crossed the Indian ocean and arrived in Calcutta on May 20, 1498. The ruler became hostile and he had to fight his way out of the harbor. In Sept. 1499 he arrived back to Lisbon and was made a noble. King Emmanuel sent 13 more ships to Calcutta and established a factory, but the 40 sailors who were left there were murdered. To avenge them the King sent 20 ships under de Gama in 1502 back to bombard Calcutta. De Gama also established colonies Mozambique and Sofala. He accomplished what he set out to do and that was find India.
