In 1869, Forrest explored the uncharted areas of north and central Western Australia. this was while he was searching for Ludwig Leichhardt's expedition which had gone missing while travelling across Australia from east to west.
In 1870, Forrest surveyed the southern part of Western Australia, following the route which Edward Eyre had taken in 1840-41 from Adelaide to Albany, across the Great Australian Bight. As the main route from eastern Australia overland to the west, he realised it needed to be surveyed so a road could be built, and later a railway.

There were many explorers who explored Australia before James Cook ever arrived on its shores.Willem Jansz/Janszoon was a Dutchman who was seeking new trade routes and trade associates. Commanding the Duyfken, he became the first recorded European to step foot on Australia's shores on the western shore of Cape York Peninsula, on 26 February 1606. However, he believed the Cape to be part of New Guinea, from whence he crossed the Arafura Sea, so he did not record Australia as being a separate, new continent. In 1616, Dutch sea-captain Dirk Hartog sailed too far whilst trying out Henderik Brouwer's recently discovered route from the Cape of Good Hope to Batavia, via the Roaring Forties. Reaching the western coast of Australia, he landed at Cape Inscription in Shark Bay on 25 October 1616. His is the first known record of a European visiting Western Australia's shores. The first Englishman to visit Australia was William Dampier, in 1688.There were also numerous French explorers who explored parts of Australia's coastline. The one who explored before James Cook was Nicholas Baudinville, who explored along the Great Barrier Reef in 1768.

Britain was the first to claim Australia, although the Dutch, Portuguese and French had explored parts of the continent's coast. Australia was first used as a penal colony for England's excess prisoners.
