No offence to the person who wrote the answers above, but I really wouldn't advise you to do any of that... For breaking the ice, you should just chat normally for a few minutes (things along the lines of "where do you live?" "what hobbies do you have?") because once you get to know the basics of someone, conversation flows much easier. If you want to crack some jokes, try not to make it fit into the conversation, don't just come out with something random like "why did the chicken cross the road?" because you will just look idiotic and desperate (unless the other person finds it funny, in which case you are OK!). Anyway, if it is really silent and awkward and you really do want to crack a joke, tell a 'did you hear about the...' joke, because the start doesn't sound so ridiculous.

For example...

YOU: did you hear the joke about the high brick wall?

HIM/HER: errr no?

YOU: I won't tell you; you'll never get over it.

Chances are, he/she will laugh; chances are also that he/she won't. Either way, go along with it and DO NOT LOOK EMBARRASSED. You now have a subject that you can use to break the ice, and possibly use as an inside joke later on.
