Joseph McCarthy was a US Senator in the 1950's, and McCarthyism was a political movement that McCarthy created, based upon a paranoid fear of communist subversion.
He had little to no proof of his accusations. The media was showing this and discussing his harsh tactics.The senate censured him because of his vulgarity and he lost almost all of his power.Finally he ended up drinking himself to death.
Congress's response was to censure him after his long tirade of baseless Communist accusations in the Army, Government, and what not. His accusations began in 1950 and after three long years of hunting Communists without facts the Army, with the Presidents blessing, put McCarthy on trial for trying to get a former aide of his better treatment in the Army. This trial/ hearing were televised for the 36 days it went on and 20 million people watched. The people who watched realized McCarthy was just a bully and his popularity began to plummet. With his popularity gone Congress finally felt confident enough to try and censure him in 1954. The censure hearing held to see if he should be censured on 46 different accounts. After about two months the hearing ended and he was censured on only 2 accounts. This took away most of his power. No one listened to his speeches and television stayed away from him. After three years as a powerless senator he died of inflammation of the liver on May 2, 1957. He was 48.

Senator Joseph McCarthy's political influence came to an end when the Senate passed a resolution against him. President Eisenhower was also against his extreme tactics. McCarthy began to dominate the news and his public hearings became embarrassing. As an aside, it can be noted that Robert F. Kennedy was once a McCarthy staffer. he resigned however.

In 1950 anti-communist hysteria began to emerge in the USA as encouraged by the actions of Senator Joe McCarthy who began accusing high-ranking US officials of being communists or at least them selling secrets to the Russians. Many government employees were found guilty about passing on secrets about the Atom Bomb but he eventually lost popularity and then soon power as his accusations grew wilder and cruder each day. All this simply served to increase tension between the two superpowers due to the hysteria created and the detest shown by this senator towards the communists.
