If it's kickstart, you need to follow this routine: key on, no throttle. Pull choke when cold, pull compression release and kick through the stroke 5-10 times, release comp release and push through stroke til you get to a spot where it's to hard to kick through. This is top dead center of the piston. Pull the comp release and push the kickstart lever about 2 inches, then release the comp release, let the kick starter come to the top, then kick as hard as you can! If it doesn't start, do it all over again.
Once you get this figured out, the bikes usually start pretty easy. If you've got a stock edelbrock carb, they are apparently junk and you may need to get a newer carb (FCR or Mikuni, I think). Look at thumpertalk.com for addtl info.
Good Luck!
In order for a bike to start it must have 3 things, AIR The easiest is checking to make sure the air filter is clean and that there are no obstructions between airbox and carb. FUEL Dump the old gas and add a gallon of fresh gas. Next pull your fuel line off of carb and turn petcock on to ensure you have gas going into the carb. It wouldn't hurt to pull the carb off and give it a good cleaning at this point. Be sure to pull your main and idle jets out and clean them and make sure you can blow through them before reassembling. SPARK Check the spark at the plug. If there is no spark, check your plug cap (cheap fix) first, if that is not it go on to your stator.
the 400 egs-e and the 600 egs-e are electric start. i think they also had a kick start for if the battery dies, but we pull the lever off so it doesnt get caught on stuff.
kick start it.
In 1997 the LC4 was the first KTM dirt bike to have an electric start.
