कल्पना चावला का जन्म हरियाण के करनाल में 1 जुलाई 1961 में हुआ था। वह पहली भारतीय मूल की अंतरिक्ष में यात्रा करने वाली महिला बनी थी। वह बनारसी लाला चावला और संज्योती की चौथी संतान थीं। वह बचपन से तीव्रबुद्धि की स्वामिनी थी। कल्पना चावला ने टैगोर पब्लिक स्कूल से अपनी पढ़ाई आरंभ की थी। 1982 में चंड़ीगढ़ से एरोनॉटिकल इंजीनियरिंग तथा 1984 में टेक्सास विश्वविद्यालय से एरोस्पेस इंजीनियरिंग में एम.ए. किया। उन्होंने 1988 में कोलोरेडो विश्वविद्यालय से डॉक्टर ऑफ़ फ़िलॉसफ़ी की डिग्री प्राप्त की। इस वर्ष से ही उन्होंने नासा के एम्स रिसर्च सेंटर में काम करना आरंभ कर दिया था। उनकी स्पेश में पहली उड़ान एस. टी. एस.-87 कोलंबिया से थी और उनकी दूसरी उड़ान जोकि उनकी अंतिम उड़ान बनी। वह 16 जनवरी 2003 को हुई थी। 1 फरवरी को वापस लौटते हुए उनका विमान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया और उनके साथ 6 और अंतिरक्षयात्री मारे गए।
