The first generation Sportage (1994-2002) with 2 liter DOHC was not interference. A broken timing belt will generally not result in engine damage and replacing the belt (don't forget the pulleys and water pump) will get you back on the road.
The sohc engines were, the dohc engines are not the above info is wrong ,DOHC is an interference engine on Kia sportages ,i rebuild them all the time, please replace timing belts when specified, damage can be tremendous.
