There were many kinds of sabertoothed cats, and they varied in size from that of a large house cat to that of a tiger or lion, and some were even bigger. The classic saber toothed "tiger" is called Smilodon and the South American species could weigh up to 500 kgs!

The Tasmanian tiger, more correctly known as the Thylacine, was last seen in 1936. The last known specimen died in the Hobart Zoo on 7 September 1936.
It is said that the last Tasmanian tiger, or Thylacine, which died in a Hobart zoo in 1936, died partially from starvation and partially from exposure. Not enough was known about the needs of this native marsupial, and it was, quite simply, not cared for properly.
Cats did not evolve from sabertoothed tigers. Rather, sabertoothed cats evolved from other cats. Modern apes evolved from miocene apes, which were somewhat similar. Miocene apes evolved from some lemur-like primate, or perhaps something like a lorise. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loris
There have been sightings, videos, and pictures since the 'last' Tasmanian tiger died, so its possible.
A lot of people will say lion , however they are wrong because they are just stupid lion fans that know nothing about a tiger's advantages. The tiger will win because it is stronger! heavier, more agile, bigger, has longer canines, is a better fighter, is smarter, and is not lazy and waits for females to hunt. Tigers rule and lions are no sicken beans
