Leo tolstoy was one of the great authors from Russia. He also wrote many stories for children. Tolstoy was born at yasnaya polnaya, tula province in Russia on 28 August 1828. He lost his parents in his childhood and was brought up by relatives. Later he joined kazan university for the study of law and orientel languages. But he was not happy with the standard of the education, so he left the university and returned home. In 1851 he joined an army with his brother in caucasus. There he read books by Plato,Dickens,Stern. Around the same time he began his career in writing. First he published a trilogy, which was his autobiographical childhood in 1852, boyhood in 1854, and youth in 1857. He travelled the European countries of Germany, France and Switzerland. On his return to yasnaya polyana, he found a school for the rural children, as he believed in the importance of education. He married sonya andreyevna behrs in 1862. The couple had thirteen children. Tolstoy wrote his major epic 'war and peace' between 1865 and 1869. This is based on the background of napoleon's attack on Russia and has 580 characters in it. His another famous work 'Anna karenina' was written during 1837-77. His other well known books are ''teachings of christ'',''wisdom of children'' and ''what I believe. A collection of tolstoy's work was by the Soviet Union after his death and it has 90 volumes. After his two well-epics he did not write much. In 'conservation' in 1878 he tried to explain his philosophies. The last novel that he wrote was 'resurrection' in 1899. In his later years he turned more of a reformer. He became seriously ill and was treated crimea. A reflection of tolstoy's moral values can be seen in gandhiji's ideology. Tolstoy did not believe in rituals and old thoughts of the church. He was even ex-communicated by the church because his thoughts went against their beliefs. He became a moral preacher in his old age . He left his home to live like a wandering sage. Tolstoy died on 20 November 1910 on a remote railway station in russia.
