Lightning may travel parallel up to 10 miles, before striking the ground. That may help to explain why you saw lightning before the rain arrived. It's perfectly normal.
Lighting occurs during volcanic eruptions. It is a result of electrical charges separating as particles of volcanic ash collide in an eruption plume.
Thunder is sound- it travels at the speed of sound- about 1100 feet per second. Lightning is light- it travels at the speed of light- about 186,000 miles a second. The light is faster, gets there first.

Lightning kills by stopping the heart, which, after all, runs on electrical impulses. Surprisingly, the bolts which Cooper says last 0.1 to 1 millisecond, are too quick to burn most victims. Burns may happen if clothing ignites or sweat boils and steam is trapped under clothing. Also high voltage elctricity can kill a person.
Lightning causes thunder. Lightning is a massive electrical discharge that you see as a bolt or flash of light. Thunder is the sound caused when the lightning superheats the air, creating a shockwave.
Lightning and thunder comes from the cumulonimbus cloud and hits the earth.
the thunderbolts and lightning were weapons thrown by the god Zeus when he was angry at his enemies.
because sound travels slower than light, the you are to the lightning the sooner you hear the thunder..

Beaded lightning is a type of cloud-to-ground lightning which appears to break up into a string of short, bright sections, which last longer than the usual discharge channel. It is relatively rare. Several theories have been proposed to explain it; one is that the observer sees portions of the lightning channel end on, and that these portions appear especially bright. Another is that, in bead lightning, the width of the lightning channel varies; as the lightning channel cools and fades, the wider sections cool more slowly and remain visible longer, appearing as "beaded lightning"
To better explain phenomenons such as lightning or why spiders weave webs.
they basically were subbed in for things humans did not understand in the past. we did not understand lightning, so zues was created to explain why lightning happened. not knowing is the greatest fear of humanity.
Lightning
In general they blame it on the gods ... just like everybody did until Ben Franklin.
Like normal lightning, it is the visual discharge when the potential difference is large. This would better be explain graphically with pictures but I'll do my best to explain. During a lightning storm, lightning is continually firing looking for a suitable conductor to touchdown with. Since all things have there own, albeit weak, electromegnetic fields, just about anything is a candidate for a strike. Little electric "feelers" extend from items like trees, grass, poles, etc up towards the sky. Since opposites attract, and if the difference is strong enough, you will see lightning shoot from the sky as it finds one of the millions of "feelers" eminating from earthly items. This can appear to come from the ground, which technically a little part does. The "feeler" lights up as it contacts the lightning, thus you see ground-to-air/air-to-ground lightning.
