PCV - positive crankcase ventilation - hoses are subjected to extremely harsh, hot gases and carry a strong vacuum - and do fail.

You'll find a variety of hoses involved in the PCV hoses - plural - routing.

Many of these hoses take hard turns and angles are so are molded to hold their shape - you need to find exact replacements for those. Luckily, most auto stores carry these specialized hoses.

Other times, you may find a hose that is part of the PCV system is straight, or takes a very shallow angle of routing. These can be replaced with bulk hose, cut-to-length.

Bad or failed hose is pretty obvious to inspection

* Visually inspect PCV hoses with particular focus on where hoses take a turn - this is where they tend to collapse

* Look, and feel for hose that has softened and can be easily pinched with your fingers. New hose does not pinch without considerable effort Take whatever remains of the hose to the auto parts store - not only matching length, but also internal diameters.

Tips:

* Before starting to yank on a hose to remove it - twist it to break it loose from where it sits onto the connector. A pair of pliers comes in very handy.

* Most times these hoses are not held on with a clamp. Pliers, channel locks, and occasionally a cool pair of hose clamp / spring clamp pliers or tools will come in handy.
