The Animal Welfare Act requires laboratories to report the number of animals used in experiments, however this act does not cover mice, rats, and birds. Mice, rats and birds are used in some 85 to 95 percent of all experiments but because they remain uncovered by the act we can only guess at how many suffer and die each year. The best I can do is give you the numbers released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. I was able to find information from 1973 to 2006. You can read look at this report on the Humane Society of the United States' website: http://www.hsus.org/animals_in_research/general_information_on_animal_research/animal_use_statistics.html

There are plenty of companies out there who do not test their products on animals. It would be impossible to either give you a number of companies or attempt to list all of the companies that don't however I can teach you methods of figuring out which companies don't on your own. Many times you can find this out on the packaging, companies that don't test their products on animals will state this proudly somewhere on the packaging. Also caringconsumer.com has a list of both companies that test their products on animals and those that don't. In this way you can search companies by name however another plus of this website is that you can search for cruelty free products by product.

Many companies use advertising on packaging stating that they do not test on animals as a corporate ethical statement, so the first line of acquiring the information would be to look there.Because of the ethical and moral implications companies would not advertise the fact that they do test on animals and it would be difficult to find such information in a companies literature if indeed they would even mention it.For a list of the companies that don't test on animals, you could go to Petakids.org
there are over 300 animals. there are aproximatly 368
