What was the purpose of the computer?

The word "computer" originally referred to a person who could do advanced math very quickly.

Later, the term was attached to the ENIAC (the first computer) which could do very advanced calculations in a short amount of time, but unfortunately occupied an entire gym-sized room.

The ENIAC led to the development of the Kenbak-1 (the first personal computer/calculator) and eventually to modern computers. Hence, the name was permanently attached to any device that could do advanced functions.

As this development took place, more tasks could be accomplished by computers including --but not limited to-- the storage, transfer, and viewing of information, playing games, and communication.

Computers are now used in many locations for specific purposes:

* On your desktop or lap * In planes, cars, trains, and other methods of transportation * In our home and cell phones

* In anything that has a screen * In satellites and other space craft (manned and unmanned)

A computer might have many purposes. It is used for many professional scientific, engineering, statistical and administrative tasks, for sending e-mails, or playing computer games. A computer can also be used for educational purposes in schools, since there are a lot of programs that are educational.A computer is also good to search information from the internet, or for watching videos, etc.

The main purpose that the computer was invented was to make large-scale mathematical work easier. The first considered a computer, although mechanical not electronic, was Charles Babbages' "Difference Engine" of the 1840s - some 170 years ago! - designed to calculate logarithm and trigonometry tables, mainly used at the time by ships' navigators.

Then when the internet was made, the computer helped prosper education and helped make work in schools easier.

Eventually, people started making what is known as flash animations.

Flash animation is basically a mini cartoon or a mini game. You may be familiar with the mini game. These flash animations were made from computers so in a way they also helped certain professions such as buisnesses and art and animation.

++ I'd add that their most important roles are in professional fields & rather than "extend", use "expedite" - though the so-called "paperless office" computers were meant to bring in, has yet to appear. If anything they do indeed "expand" work, especially paperwork!
