  • Earth science is the study of Earth, air, and water. One of the challenges of Earth science is to record Earth's constant changes and to understand the cyclical nature of how Earth's systems work. Earth scientists aim to understand the interconnectedness of the atmosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and in part, the biosphere, of planet Earth over time.
  • Earth science is generally broken into four smaller fields of study: astronomy, hydrology, meteorology, and geology. Scientists in each field use their expertise to investigate what they know best, whether it's water, rocks, air, or space! Earth scientists specialize their work, so they often communicate with other Earth scientists to find out things they need to know.
  • Astronomy: Astronomers study the formation of Earth and the stars, as well as their movement. The movement of Earth around the sun affects the amount and distribution of daylight and causes the four different seasons: fall, winter, summer, and spring.
  • Hydrology: Hydrology is the study of Earth's water reservoirs (oceans, rivers, lakes, streams, air, ice) and how water moves among them. Hydrologists have figured out that 97 percent of the world's water is in the oceans, and only 1 percent of all water on Earth is drinkable.
  • Meteorology: Meteorology is not the study of meteors; it is the science devoted to studying Earth's atmosphere and weather systems. You've probably seen a meteorologist forecasting the weather on TV. Meteorologists also study, hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes, and other air-related phenomena.
  • Geology: Geologists study Earth and the processes that have shaped it throughout Earth's history. This includes the study of volcanoes and earthquakes, as well as the processes that make mountains and wear them down into canyons over hundreds of millions of years.
