In the console or in the dash, depending on location of shifter, or possible on the outside of the transmission.
To replace the neutral safety switch in a 1988 Nissan Pathfinder, first, ensure the vehicle is in park or neutral and disconnect the negative battery terminal. Locate the neutral safety switch, which is typically mounted on the transmission. Remove the electrical connector and the retaining bolts, then take out the old switch. Install the new switch by reversing the disassembly steps, ensuring it's properly aligned, and reconnect the battery.
Std. transmission would not have a neutral safety switch - if anything it would have a clutch safety switch located usually at the top of the clutch pedal

The neutral safety switch on this bike is behind the oil filter's aluminum housing. Don't try to bypass the switch as this will make the bike very dangerous in starting.

On the top of the transmission next to the reverse lamp switch. Unfortunately that means it is underneath the car in the "channel" on top.
I would replace the neutral safety switch; Buy it from the Ford dealer where they can print out the picture of it along with its location. I hope this helps you. Mark
