Rum is made from a botanical that goes by its common name, sugarcane. Any distillate or mixture of distillates made from the juice of sugarcane, sugarcane molasses or other by product of sugarcane. The rum must be distilled at a proof no less than 80 proof, and no higher than 190 proof. The product must also carry the common characteristics (taste and aroma) that rum is known for.
There is no sugar in rum.
Well, not actually true. There is an allowable percentage of sugar or glycerine that can be added to spirits without being listed on the label. This is true for vodka and gin as well.
