When trimming, trim dead and diseased branches first. Then any branches growing toward the center of the tree, as well as branches crossing each other. It is important when trimming a maple, as well as any other opposite leaf tree (2 leaves across from each other on a twig) to cut right above a leaf, and do it at an angle to cut one of the leaves off. This insures that you remove one of the growth nodes that are right above each leaf. If you cut strait across then both nodes will grow and you will get what is called witches broom. You see this on trees that are continuously hedged. Each twig has what resembles a broom on the end of it and it gets extremely clustered. If it's a silver maple you are wanting to trim, do yourself a favor and have an arborist trim it at the base, they are nothing but problems. Hope this helps.
