He believed that deeds had almost nothing to do with the path to salvation, so I guess he was just a huge dick to everyone but since he still went to church he was allowed entrance into heaven anyway. This way of life is kind of like the godfather, thinking that no matter the deeds you have done here, you are still allowed salvation into heaven if you simply go to mass and confess about being a prick.
