if this is the problem where the engine warms up slightly and the temperature gauge jumps from cold to off the hot side, then this is a fairly common issue.

it is most likely caused by a faulty temp gauge sending unit or poor connection.

I have a 1995 Mazda 626 in which I recently replaced the thermostat. It's not actually running hot but the gauge reads otherwise. Is there anything else that may cause this?

Measure the temp of the upper radiator hose very close to the warmed up engine using an infrared temp gun. If the gun reads 190 to 200 (normal) and the vehicles gauge doesn't match, replace the temp gauge sending unit on the engine. Your local auto parts store will let you use a temp gun for zip.

95Mazda 626 stick rpms jump up and down when you stop and car temp gauge stays hot?

If a 1995 Mazda 626 Manual Transmission has the rpms jumping up and down when stopped and the temperature gauge runs hot all the time, it is possible that the engine has a cracked block. When the block is cracked, the engine will not build up enough compression to stay running and will not hold coolant long enough to keep the engine cool.
