flywheel/flex plate could have damaged or missing teeth, i have seen this on a 1998 Ford Escort and a 1952 international half ton
On the starter.
If you mean the starter solenoid, it's on the starter.
A mechanic.
I replaced the starter but it makes a grinding nose how do i fix it
Probably about $150 and up.
Your battery could need replaced, your alternator or starter could be going bad. It is best to have a mechanic look at it if this bothers you or it continues.
Don't ever !!!!!
The starter is mounted at the top of the transaxle at the back of the engine. You can see it clearly if you remove the air filter box.
you can get to the starter from the top side if you pull the air filter housing and hose off first then you can see the starter my 95 as 14mm bolts
Possibly bad spark plug cable(s) (have you replaced them since 1996?)
Have an experienced mechanic listen to the starter as you engage it and crank the engine over. He can tell if the starter is to tight, to loose or just right. There is a process to measure the correct spacing between the starter drive and the flywheel. Not easily done by a non-mechanic.
The Nissan Quest starter is the same.
