The substance loosely called selenium sulfide (approximate formula SeS2) is the active ingredient in some anti-dandruff shampoos. The selenium compound kills the scalp fungus Malassezia, which causes shedding of dry skin fragments. The ingredient is also used in body lotions to treat Tinea versicolor due to infection by a different species of Malasseziafungus.

Selenium plays a vital role in metabolism, hormonal, antioxidant and immune functions. It initiates DNA repair in damaged cells, inhibits the proliferation of cancerous cells, and induces their death. Selenium works together with vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant. Together, they perform vital antioxidant functions throughout the body, which reduces the risk of Heart disease and cancer, and reduces inflammation in cases of rheumatoid Arthritis.

Death from cancer, including lung, colorectal, and prostate cancers, is lower among people with higher blood levels or intake of selenium. In addition, the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer is significantly higher in areas of the United States with low soil selenium content. Selenium might affect cancer risk in two ways. As an anti-oxidant, selenium can help protect the body from damaging effects of free radicals. Selenium may also prevent or slow tumor growth. Certain breakdown products of selenium are believed to prevent tumor growth by enhancing immune cell activity and suppressing development of blood vessels to the tumor.

Selenium is also one of a group of antioxidants that may help limit the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and thereby help to prevent coronary artery disease.
