Optical nerve drusen are a congenital disorder of the optic nerve that can be seen on a dilated eye exam. They are seen as one or more raised areas on the optic nerve head that are composed of bundles of glial tissue. They commonly have no effect on the visual function, but can occasionally be responsible for an increased blind spot. However, this is usually only seen with a visual field exam in an eye doctor's office.

Newton observed that color is not inherent in objects. Rather, the surface of an object reflects some colors and absorbs all the others. We perceive only the reflected colors. If an optic nerve is inflamed as can be the case in multiple sclerosis; if there is poor blood supply to the optic nerve; if the eye is suffering from very far advanced glaucoma and other reasons, then the optic disc will be very pale to white in color.

The natural blind spot (scotoma) is due to lack of receptors (rods or cones) where the optic nerve and blood vessels leave the eye. It is where the optic nerve leaves the retina not enter it. The optic disk or blind spot is where the optic nerve leaves the eye; you cannot use that field of vision because the optic nerve is there.
