Who are the migrants that came to New Zealand as Gum diggers?

The Gum Diggers were those who worked in the old kauri fields digging for kauri gum. The early Gum diggers were from Europe, and a large proportion of them were from from Dalmatia, on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. Because the Dalmatians did not settle permanently in New Zealand but sent their income back home to their families, their presence was resented. Subsequently, by the early 20th century, only British subjects could hold gum-digging licences. Many Dalmatians intermarried with the local Maori and others moved south to northwest Auckland where they began planting grapevines and started what is now a major industry in New Zealand, winemaking.
