Although they had more rights than their Greek and Roman predecessors (they could for instance inherit an estate in their own name, and they could divorce their husbands on a fair number of grounds) the general idea was that a woman's place was in the home. And although a father or husband had no longer a right of life and death over his wife or daughter like in ancient Greece and Rome, domestic violence was a common problem - and a common reason for divorce.
