The Crusades were holy wars fought between the Europeans, Muslims, and Turks to try to regain control of Jerusalem. The people who fought were all just volunteers who listened to the Pope and decided to go join up.

For the Christians, the largest element of the army was led by Raymond of Toulouse (1,200 cavalry and 8,500 infantry); Godfrey of Bouillon and Robert of Normandy each led around 1,000 cavalry and 7,000 infantry. These troops were mainly "French" in the loosest sense of the word, since the Norman contingent did not consider themselves to be Frenchmen. The word used for them at the time ("Franks" or Ifranj in Turkish) is probably a better term.

The opposing forces were from both the Egyptian Fatimid Caliphate army, which included troops of many different races, and the Seljuk Turks.
