The Phantoscope, a prototype of the motion picture projector was invented by Charles Francis Jenkins, while living in Washington D.C. in the early 1890s. He displayed the first motion picture before an audience, using reeled film and electric light, in 1894 in Richmond, Indiana, near his boyhood home. Jenkins twice patented the machine before selling it to a partner who then sold it to Thomas Edison.
