The eight stages of communication process are stimulus, ideation, encoding, reception, decoding, understanding, and action. These are all needed for effective communication between two or more people.
The two-step flow model was first introduced by http://www.answers.com/topic/paul-lazarsfeld and http://www.answers.com/topic/elihu-katz. Unlike the http://www.answers.com/topic/hypodermic-needle-model which considers mass media effects to be direct, the two-step flow model stresses human agency. According to Lazarsfeld and Katz, mass media information is channeled to the "masses" through http://www.answers.com/topic/opinion-leadership. The people with most access to media, and having a more literate understanding of media content, explain and diffuse the content to others. Two-step flow model laid the foundation for http://www.answers.com/topic/diffusion-of-innovations. Theory stating that the non-personal marketing message is really passed on to an opinion leader who then passes it on to the individual consumer. Believers in this theory attempt to base their marketing strategy on identifying opinion leaders and communicating their marketing message to them.
Unlike the 2-step flow theory which involves only two steps of influence, this theory exposes multiple souces of influnece. Diffusion involves the process by which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over a period of time among the members of a social system. An innovation can be referred to as an idea, practice, or object that is perceived to be new by an individual. This theory assumes that the audience is completely influenced by the opinion leaders whose source is the media. An example is the rise and fall of fashion trends on the market, The media chooses an accessory and advertises it to be 'in fashion', fashion designers/fashionistas are exposed to this information by the media, they then take it and they pass it unto the masses. Soon enough the accessory is being patronised by the masses and viewed by the mass as a trend (smalliemeagainsttheworld.blogspot.nl/2010/05/multi-step-flow-theory-or-diffusion-of.html)

The multi-step theory suggests most people form opinions based upon the influence and opinion of leaders. An example of this are political opinions infiltrated to the public by the media.
