The short answer is "no". It is not, strictlly, necessary and there have been many examples in history when ordination to the priesthood or episcopacy has happened directly from the lay state. It has, however, been a long-established custom for ordination to the diaconate to be normative before ordination as a priest.

What are the materials used in Holy Orders?

---- ====== ====== The sacrament of Holy Orders does not just mean ordination to the priesthood but to the diaconate and episcopacy as well. Before they were suppressed, there were six minor orders also worth consideration. Each of these orders had its own materials or symbols, that were used for the specific order being conferred. In the case of ordination to priesthood, by far the most common association of the sacrament, the priests hands are anointed with the Oil of the Catechumens and receive the laying on of hands by the ordained bishop. This is the "matter" of the sacrament and so must be present during the ceremony if the ordination is to be valid.

Who can confer Holy Orders?

Only a bishop may confer holy orders on a candidate to the diaconate or priesthood. In order for the ordination to be legal in the eyes of the Church, the bishop must have jurisdiction and a papal mandate to perform this sacrament, unless emergency circumstances necessitate otherwise.

Is United New Testament Church a mail-order-church?

Is the United New Testament Church a mail-order-church ?It is true that to pass ordination, you must only agree to the doctrine of the church, But Trinity Evangelical Christian Ministries, the educational adjunct, provides courses to help each pastor increase his accreditation.http:/www.untci.org1 - There are no personal reference checks.2 - There are no ministerial reference checks.3 - There are no religious educational requirements.4 - There are no criminal background checks. It is purposefully easy for anyone to become ordained by this church because apostolic ministry is encouraged, but it is understood that it is the pastor's responsibility to increase her credibility with documented education. As with any profession, if one is seeking pastoral care, one should proceed with caution and ask for educational and referential credentials.I do not agree with the 8 year seminary requirements for Catholic Priests, however, due to way too many "wolfs in sheep's clothing" in churches withinnot just the past decade, but even currently !Ordination in most christian churches requires :1 - MORE than agreeing to a doctrinal statement of faith !2 - Personal and ministerial references are A MUST !3 - Religious educational requirements are A MUST !4 - Criminal background checks are A MUST !Without these requirements for Ministerial Ordination, then a homosexual can getordination ! then pedophiles can get ordination ! then the queer child abuser willtake advantage of the kids in church ! if a convicted felon or an alcoholic getsordination ALL THE MORE shame and embarasments are brought not just to theIndividual Church, but ALOT OF HARM will be done to THOSE IN THE CHURCH !I have seen way too many mail-order ministers try to counsel persons withoutany education or training, only to cause more damage, than to do any good !Well, it seems the above is a very misinformed response, and possibly libelous.1) The site clearly states that the applicant's physical, legal identity is validated by a real person before any letter of ordination is extended.2) UNTCI is actually the ONLY online ordination outreach that DOES provide background checks. I looked.3) Yes, they do most of their outreach to independent ministers through the medium of the internet. This makes perfect sense, as it is the best way to reach the most people around the world who are feeling called into ministry. "Guilty by association" shouldn't apply here - they are clearly different than ordination mills like the ULC who will ordain anyone, anytime, anywhere for any reason - and your cat, too, if you like.4) The following clause is at the bottom of every page of their website, so it appears they DO expect a certain level of behavior from their ministers and there is a system of accountability in place: UNTCI retains the right to suspend or revoke any ordination if it is being used for anything other than Christian services. We DO NOT embrace religions that exclude Jesus Christ as the one and only path to salvation. Further, UNTCI reserves the right to revoke ordination at the sole discretion of the Prelate at any time, for any reason, including but not limited to: allegations of fraud, domestic abuse, sexual misconduct or making false claims about UNTCI or one's association therewith.5) As far as I can tell, they are also the ONLY online ordination ministry that has an annual convention of ministers and real hands-on ordination ceremonies for the newly ordained. It appears that if one was going to go the route of becoming ordained independently online, UNTCI would be the ONLY legitimate choice.--------------------RevTed is obviously a UNTCI employee or has received his mail order ordination and/or bogus degree from UNTCI / TECU. Are their ordinations and degrees/certifications legal? Yes. Are they credible? No - Not worth the paper they are printed on. People will believe what ever they want to in order to satisfy their egos.I also find certain comments here prejudicial. I was ordained by the ULC in 2004, but after realizing that they were NOT focused on Christian ministry, I transferred my ordination to UNTCI. It's all about faith, and doing what is right in God's eyes. I am an ex-offender, having found Jesus in prison, and He strengthening me to turn my life around. Conversely, I have seen scores of priests and rabbis who have had religious education and background checks who have engaged in criminal activity. One must not judge someone's life before they turned to Christ, but what one has done in His name. Jesus said you will know them by their fruits. If a man was called by God and seeks ordination, UNTCI is a good place. But if it is for dastardly deeds, they will be exposed and their and their ordination revoked. I have been active in Christian ministry for 7 yrs now, and am not engaged in criminal activity or addictive behavior. See what God can do?

What are the things required to receive Holy Orders in the Roman Catholic church today?

Roman Catholic answerTo receive the sacrament of ordination in the Catholic Church, one must be a unmarried male, at least twenty-five years of age (except in certain circumstances, for instance permanent deacons and already married clergy from other communions who convert) but in all instances, one must take a vow of celibacy (which means you can not marry) before the actual ordaination. You must be "called" by the Bishop, and usually an acclamation by the people in the Church is requested. You must have completed a certain amount of education, for a priest this would be two years of college level philosophy and four years of graduate level theology. You must not be an active homosexual, nor be in debt. You must also be free of any vows that would be contrary to priesthood, the marriage vow would be an example. You must have been a Roman Catholic for at least one full year before being accepted into a seminary. Before entering the seminary, a background check is usually done.Deacons, priests and bishops receive Holy Orders.

Must a priest be celibate before ordination?

The word "celibate" means not married, and a candidate for the priesthood must be celibate, as in not married, ordinarily. If you mean, as so many young people today use the word, as chastity, then, yes, a candidate for the priesthood must be chaste before ordination. If you mean does the candidate have to be a virgin, then, no, this is not a requirement. For instance, a man who is a widower may apply to his bishop to enter the seminary.

Are rabbis ordained and is this a disputed question in Judaism?

Rabbis are ordained. They must be knowledgeable in Torah-laws and observances, since part of their function is to answer questions in these matters. As concerns disputed ordination, every movement in Judaism ordains separately and oftentimes the ordination given by one movement is invalid other movements, especially as concerns the divide between Torah Judaism and Liberal Judaism. However, the process of ordination can only be rescinded on account of grievous acts or excommunication.
