I assume it's a floor shifter. Could be a problem with the shifter or else with the transmission itself. I'd suggest looking at the shifter first, which can be removed from inside the vehicle. The end of the shifter that protrudes into the transmission may have broken off, especially if this happened suddenly. That happened to me on my 81. It also may be very, very worn. If everything looks OK with the shifter, then it's probably the tranny itself, which is a much tougher scenario.

I suggest purchasing a repair manual for that vehicle. Bentley published the best manuals for Volkswagens, if you can find one.
Alternater is frozen or the idler pully. Check each pully the belt goes around, one of them will be stuck.
