If this part isn't made anymore then the part itself would be a lot more expensive. If the part is located and replaced by said mechanic then the price would be fair.

You would fix it by replacing the instrument cluster. The speedometer itself may not be faulty, it is more likely to be a problem with the speed sensor.

The speedometer itself will work but you will need to take the instrument cluster apart and transplant the speedometer unit from the 92 cluster into the 87 cluster. The speedo mechanism is the same but the clusters are different.
