My 2001 mercury cougar won't go anywhere when i put it into drive it will back up when in reverse but won't go when in drive. What is wrong with it?

I have a 2001 Mercury Cougar it goes in reverse and first and second but it wont go in drive when i put it in drive the rpm just go up.
