I'm chasing the same thing on a 2.9 out of a broncoII. I have it in a suzuki samurai and it will not advance. It rattles under acceleration and is sluggish. As I understand the advance curve is controlled by the computer (eec-IV). The advance is controled by the SPOUT output from the TFI module on the side of the distributor. Your tach or REV counter may have also failed, also up gear chances on auto can be jerky. Things to check are in particular order:- 1. Hall GAP sensor inside the distributor. 2. TFI module. 3. Wiring from the TFI module to ECC. 4. The ECC. Its very unlightly to be the ECC, I would start by putting a pin into the spout wire need the distributor end. This allows you to connect a multi meter to wire without disconnecting it from the TFI. OK, Engine running:- Measure the output is should be a pulse signal, so if you have a Hz setting on you multi meter use it. Otherwise it will results if a DC voltage which should increase as the engine revs. This signal is what your ecc needs to measure the speed of the engine, and so advance the spark. If you get no signal at this point check the TFI module or hall gap sensor. If you do get a signal at this points its the wiring to the ecc or the ecc at fault. Just for your information:- SPOUT signal comes from the stator passing the hall gap sensor in the distributor onto the TFI module and then onto the ECC. PIP signal comes back from ECC into the TFI and then onto the coil to fire. This should get you going , Nick.
Replace the pick up coil it's inside the distributor. This may fix it.

On a 1996 Ford Bronco the turn signal flasher is plugged in to the fuse box
I would suspect the ignition module. It is attached to the distributor with 2 screws.
There is the FULL SIZE BRONCO and then the Bronco II ( the Bronco II is smaller , eventually replaced by the Ford Explorer)
Defective electronic control module.or maybe starter
you can buy a book on it in advance for $20 i had to on my bronco the book will have a complete tear down on the truck

is there any corrosion on the spades of the coil?or on the connectors?you say DIS,i think distributorless ignition system that an 89 doesnt have,is that correct?or are you meaning distributor cap?
The Bronco II was made till 1990. The it was replaced by the Explorer in 1991.
It depends on what you mean by computer. The '88 bronco has an TFI control module mounted on the distributor. It is held on by 2 Phillips screws and should be relatively easy to take off without removing the distributor.
