I have a 95 with one of those stupid indicators on it. The arrow is indicating the shift points for ideal fuel management. I ignore mine when I need to get going. If you are just out for a stroll then pay attention to it. The simple answer is youre not going to mess up anything if you dont shift where it tells you too. If you dont want the engine to bog down then accelerate a bit beyond when the arrow comes on then shift.
