This is actually a fairly common belief, though its exact form changes.

Many branches of Christianity (ranging from small sects to fairly large groups) believe that people, as spiritual beings, existing long before the formation of their body. Then they are born, live out their lives and then return to the spirit world. A fair percentage of these sects believe that the spirit of the person (both before and after life) is either an angel or at least "angelic", in that they act as messengers for God, can help mankind, and so on. Without more information, I couldn't narrow it down more than that.
