It might be that your boyfriend was telling you that he does things for you, not because he feels like he HAS TO, but because he cares about you. Another word for obligation is responsibility so it really depends on his tone of voice and what else went on in the conversation before that statement. He might also be trying to say that he hopes you don't think that you are his responsibility. It's a toss-up. You would have to give me more information on that one to answer better.
