I am assuming that the vehicle is a petrol injection vehicle and that the vehicle is serviced regularly (new spark plugs etc)? If so then flooding is cause by an excess of fuel in the cylinder that hasn't been burnt prior to turning the engine off.

This fuel could be entering the cylinder due to faulty fuel injectors. If fuel is escaping past the injector with the engine switched off then it will lead to flooding especially if the engine is cold. The only way to rectify this problem would be to have the injectors tested professionaly and replaced as necessary.

Fixing flooded engine?

I had problems on occasion with my first car (1979 Pontiac Firebird) having the engine flooded. (When starting, I "pumped" the gas alot, quite often "flooding the engine".) Naturally, a flooded engine is (darned near) impossible to start. But the "quick fix" I found was to hold the pedal to the floor while turning the ignition. It was eventually able to start and burn the excess gas. Note: This trick only works on carbureted models. So in nutshell: Floor it, turn the ignition. (And try not to pump the gas so much before you start it next time!!!) -Ric

How can i fix my 94 Mazda protege got flooded and cranks but won't start?

Flooded in the river or flooded by gas? Any "check engine lights"? Full gas pedal depression is the normal way to clear gas flooding or first remove the spark plugs and blow out the excess gas.

How do you prevent a car engine from flooding?

To prevent problems from occurring keep the vehicle serviced regularly by a trusted, professional mechanic. The year, make, model and engine info would help for more details.

What causes a 1999 sierra 5 3 liter to hard start only if its been setting the right amount of time sets short time starts good sets long time starts good maybe fuel regulator?

I had exactly the same problem with my 1996 Dodge Intrepid. The fuel pressure regulator was leaking which caused flooding of the engine if the engine were off for the right length of time. Too short and the engine did not have time to flood. Too long and the fuel evaporates and engine is no longer flooded. Just right and the engine is flooded and hard to start.

Why does my engine knock after my husband drove it through a flooded street?

Possible internal engine damage.

Why does your ATV get flooded?

An ATV's engine can get flooded if you hold the throttle open for too long. At the bottom of the carburetor, there is a screw that can be opened to drain it.

How long does it take till you can start after engine flooding?

There are a lot of variables that determine the amount of time you need to wait. * Condition of fuel is one of the more serious potential problems, with older fuel taking much longer to clear out and presenting a greater potential for flooding. * Poor engine compression will also make flooding into a much worse problem. * As will a weak ignition system In general, most injected (EFI) engines do not "flood" unless something is wrong with one or more injectors. Once you've discovered which has caused the problem, try a little starting fluid. The ether in the starting fluid is so much more volatile that it will often start the engine even if other problems exist, and of course, once the engine starts, even with the starting fluid, it will clear out the flooding problem.

How do you un-flood a Jet Ski motor?

Depends on the type of flooding. Hopefully the gas flooded and not the water flooded. If it's flooded by gas try starting it with throttle wide open. If it doesn't work after a while, remove spark plugs and crank engine over for few seconds (remember to watch out for the spark) Install new spark plugs. If the engine is flooded from water, you will have to remove the spark plugs and crank on it for a while till all water comes out. *I have personal experience here* Install spark plugs and attempt to start, if not remove plugs and keep cranking. It may fire for a second or two. Keep removing spark plugs to dry them off and crank some more. Keep this up back and forth for a while, or till engine fires up.

When a flooded engine occurs?

you can try getting the engine blowed out, but that may not solve it if it has sat a long period of time.
