Connect a code scanner appropriate to your vehicle (newer vehicles use OBD2, older vehicles are manufacturer specific) and see what the computer is trying to tell you.
You can usually go to a local auto parts retailer and "borrow, rent or buy" a code scanner. Sometimes they'll even help you connect it and read what it means... if you're nice to them.
