There are no benefits of transferring files from an MP4 to an AVI. There are benefits of converting AVI files to MP4. AVI is an older format and more devices are designed to play MP4 files.

It isn't that your computer won't "Accept" the files, you can certainly load the files onto the computer, you just don't currently have any application software that can read the avi files. I just try to play an avi file yesterday, "I copy the file on cdr and put it in my xbox drive then try to play it .... then it says you need an update to play this file... then after this update I am able to play the avi files!

There are a few free movie player programs that can play AVI files. The most popular are those that can be found at the websites for DivX and Free AVI Player.
You have to sync the avi with your Windows Phone Zune software on your computer and it should play. If it doesn't play correctly try a video conversion software such as Freemake to convert it into a phone friendly form of avi. If you have a Windows Mobile phone then the converter is your best bet. It always worked for me.

From what i gathered so far both the QNAP media station and QMobile cannot play .avi files. in order to do so you must trans-code the video files by clicking on them, and waiting (this will take quite long) for them to trans-code into .flv files.
I am glad to say that, yes, it will. If the video player built-into the android operating system does not open AVI files, there is a lot of video players on the android market and I am positive that many of them play AVI files.
