My dog has had a limp in his back leg for a couple of days and he'll whine and growl a little if pressure is applied to it everyone said it was a sprain but you dont know?

No you don't know. I'd suggest taking the dog to the vet though. It could be more. Even young dogs can have Arthritis or torn muscles. Some dogs hide pain really well. My dog even had heat stroke and I didn't find out until he threw up.
