It's difficult to know why he did what he has. Some men when they hit their 40's plus go through a type of menopause called, 'Andropause' and with that and knowing one is growing older we all have to admit that there are points in our life where we question where we have ended up either in the workplace, what we have accomplished in our lives and are we satisfied in every aspect of our life. Some men (as well as women) want to hang onto their youth and have a desire to attract the younger of the opposite sex. Whatever your husbands reasoning's for leaving your marriage for another woman and her family he is still the father of your son and feels a responsibility and obviously love towards his son. That is a type of responsibility.
Although very painful for you, it shows that he does love his son and is willing to give time and effort into helping his son.
When you see him next take time (with your son not involved in your conversation with your ex) get him to communicate with you why he felt the need to end the marriage and why did he take the week off to help your son. This will clarify your questions.
