A lot of times people do not realize that the size of the extension cords used can negatively effect the electric item it is powering. I think he may have connected the blower using a smaller guage wire (of the extension cord) than he should have, causing too much heat at the plug and inside the blower. Probably the blower got too hot and the switch is defective and the only way he is able to keep it going is to hold the switch in the on position.
If you are handy dismantle the blower and check the switch or replace, then I think, it will work.... also get an extension cord of equal gauge or larger.
