Your father's discharge will list what the three battle stars were for. There is a section on the discharge titled: "awards and decorations" where they can be found. They will probably be "abbreviated" in military "shorthand", which can be deciphered by going (or calling) a local American Legion Post, VFW or a Veteran's Service Officer at many local, state and Federal government offices.

First, confirm he was awarded two Bronze Stars. Look through his personal papers for his discharge. There is an Awards and Decorations section on it. If the Bronze Star is listed, they would have been awarded with a written Citation. Look for those. If neither of these can be located, check for his discharge at your County Clerk Office. Many returning vets were told to file their Discharge there (I did). If he ever bought a house, particularly with a VA GI BILL loan, he would have had to prove he was Honorably discharged by submitting the discharge. And as a vet, it's possible he may have qualified for a veteran's exemption on his property taxes, so check the local assessors office. And if he joined a local VFW or American Legion post, they may have a discharge on file. If all this fails, take proof of your "kinship" along with all information you have (Name, service, dates of service, rank, where served, etc) to a Veterans Service Officer at most federal buildings and some county office buildings, and they will help you out.
