Your fish would not have died because it got caught in a plant. It would have died because it was in bad water conditions. Fish do not survive for long in bowls because they need to have room and lots of fresh water. The rule is 1 inch of fish needs 1 gallon of water. Goldfish regularly grow to over 1 foot long. That means for 1 goldfish you need to supply at least 12 gallons of water. That also means you would need a tank/aquarium rated to hold around 15 to 20 gals. because tanks are never filled to the brim and there should be at least 1 or 2 inches of gravel at the bottom of the tank for plants to grow in too.
