the 97 escort has a hydraulic clutch. it uses brake fluid from the same system as the brakes. i dont think there is any adjustment possible. check your brake fluid level.

depending on the vehicle, most have a circuit board where the rear lights go in then on to the rear light covers.these tend to go out with time. you should pull the plug and test the wires to see if they have fire. if they dont then it will be the brake light switch located on the brake pedal under the dash. if it does have fire then it is the circuit boards.

it could be a plunger relay switch or pressure switch as some people call them. It will be mounted on the brake pedal arm. but i would check the bulbs first because if it is a dual filament bulb it could have gone out on one filament and not another. if your tail lights work and the blinkers work while the tail lights are on then most likely it is the switch on the pedal

All those circuts are seperate. They each have there own fuse. If all the tail lights and brake lights are out check the main wire harness that feeds them. Check to see if it's been damaged or unplugged. Check the fuses of course. Check the bulbs also.
Under the dash where the brake pedal rests there should be a switch that the pedal hits when it is released, push it in with your hand, if the lights go out then it needs to be adjusted out toward the pedal by loosening the jam nuts on either side and threading them back. Be for starting the van press down on your emergency brake one click then start the van. As long as you dont use the emergency brake your running lights should stay off. To permanently dissable them you could try defeeting that switch

Maybe a fuse or relay burned out sounds like a bad multifunction switch, very common issue with older gm's in the 90s. Believe it or not gm wired the brake lights to be powered off the multi-function switch assembly in the steering column
